Acts 28:31
Thank you for reading my previous post. If this is the first post you're reading, welcome! Glad you're joining in! Last week was a what could be called "brief" story of how God saved me and brought me to this point of wanting to church plant. Here, I want to share with you why Calgary, where is Calgary, and information about Calgary.
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, Canada. Alberta is known for its production of beef and oil, earning itself the nickname "The Texas of Canada." Calgary is in the Mountain Time Zone and 2 hours behind the Eastern Standard time the North Carolina is in. Calgary is 2,394 miles from Winston-Salem. It would take 1 and a half days to travel from Winston-Salem, to Calgary nonstop. Demographics: According to the 2016 Canada Census, Calgary has a population of almost 1.5 million people, this made it the third largest city in Canada (behind Toronto and Montreal), as well as, the largest city in Alberta. Between 2011 and 2016, the city grew by 12.99%. Calgary is also a very young city, the median age is 36.4 years old with 70% of the population between 15 to 64 years of age. 29.4% of Calgarians are immigrants who moved here from other countries (some have even relocated from other provinces in Canada). This make Calgary a very diverse city with the communities laid out as such as well. English is the official language with about 70% of people speaking it as a first language. There is also, however, a bounty of languages spoken in Calgary, 25.3% of Calgarians speak another unofficial language and only 1.5% speak french. Spiritual State: Of the 1.4 million inhabitants, only 5.2% claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. Which means that as it stands, about 95% of the population do not know Jesus Christ as Lord, with some people never hearing his name. The Canadian National Baptists (CNBC), the sister organization to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), would hold only about 1 church per 46,365 people. The SBC has 9 active Church Planters there and 86 active NAMB church partners. While Calgary is a vibrant city, ripe with culture, and people, spiritually it is a very dark place. With the aforementioned numbers, it definitely shows that Calgary needs a Gospel. With Calgary being consistently one of the fastest growing major North American Cities, bustling growing communities by the 10's of thousands, a Gospel presence needs to be planted in each one. Thank you for reading this post! If the Lord is calling you to support His work in this city, there are three ways. This is found in the Get in Touch link. Click that link and all the information is there. Next post will share my budget and the amount that I intend to raise to be able to move up here by Summer/Fall 2020

If you've read my about me section, then you've read about how I got introduced to Calgary. If you haven't then, please don't hesitate to go read it. You'll find out a bit more about how the Lord worked in my life to save me, grow me, and call me to Calgary. I want to show you a video by the North American Mission Board that gives a brief introduction to Calgary, AB.
This is Bob Shelton in this video. He is the church planting catalyst for the Calgary. This means that he is the man that mentors all the church planters that move to Calgary and disciples them. If anyone knows this city from the perspective of the church planter its him. In this video he talked about the vision that he has for this rapidly expanding city is to have a healthy church in every single community. Ultimately, my hope is to be one of those planters in one of those communities.
This is indeed a brief introduction to this blog post and to the city of Calgary. In the next post, I plan to share some specifics about the city. These will include the Size, area, and a basic overview of the city and it's need of the Gospel. Thank you reading this post and watching this short video. Please visit the Get in Touch page and sign-up for the newsletter. Also, all of my social media handles are up there as well. I look forward to sharing more with you all about Calgary and about God's work in my life! Grace and Peace! |
